Waterbom opened in Kuta in December 1993 and has been voted Asia's number one water park nine years running, which is long enough to have worked out what a good day actually looks like. Most of its 3.8 hectares is garden rather than concrete mature trees, deep shade, lawns, and gazebos you can book for the day and treat as base camp.

That balance is the entire trick. There are more than twenty rides, arranged so nobody in the group has to compromise. The Python seats four at once, so the shouting on the way down is half the point. Smashdown 2.0 drops you twenty-six metres. The Lazy River is a 360-metre float that asks nothing of you whatsoever, and you can stay in it as long as you like.

The small things matter more than you would expect. The pools are salt-chlorinated, so eyes do not sting and nobody goes home smelling of chemicals. There is a swim-up bar for parents who have earned one. The kids' area has no height minimum, which means the smallest members of the family are not watching from the side.
The park runs from nine until six, every day. Book tickets before you go in high season it sells out and give yourself the whole day. Nobody has ever regretted staying until closing.
